Fractions are where a lot of children stall for the first time — not because they cannot do it, but because ten different rules arrive almost at once. This generator turns that into ten separate sheets. Each one practises exactly one thing, and says at the top which.

A mixed worksheet tells you, at the end, that six out of twenty were wrong. What it does not tell you is which step is missing. Was it the common denominator? The simplifying afterwards? Or did multiplication get the addition procedure applied to it, because that was still the freshest thing in the child's head?
So here every sheet carries a single task type, with the matching instruction line in its heading — "Write each fraction in its lowest terms.", "Write <, > or = between them." A child who cannot finish such a sheet has a problem with a name. And a child who finishes it has ticked off something specific.
The ten task types are not listed alphabetically but in the order they turn up in class: read a fraction and shade a fraction, then build up and simplify, then convert and compare, then the four operations.
Two points in that sequence are deliberate. Building up comes before simplifying, because building up is constructive — multiply both parts by the same number — while simplifying is its inverse and additionally requires spotting a common divisor. And comparing sits immediately before adding, because comparing unlike fractions is exactly the "find the common denominator" step, without the arithmetic that addition piles on top of it.
Missing numbers. On roughly 40% of the exercises it is not the answer that is missing but one of the numbers before it: 1/4 + ▢ = 3/4, ▢ − 3/16 = 7/16. The child has to reverse the operation instead of working forwards. The rest stay in standard form so the sheet does not become uniformly hard.
Working-out lines. Top-aligns each exercise and adds a faint rule beneath it — room to actually write the conversion down. Fractions need writing space in a way that 7 + 5 never did.
Mixed numbers. Improper results print as 2 1/3 rather than 7/3, and at the hard level the operands themselves may be mixed.
Lowest terms. The answer is expected fully simplified — and the instruction line at the top then says so.
The fraction pictures are shaded grey, not black. That is not a matter of taste: with black fill, the divider between two shaded parts is black on black and disappears, so a run of shaded parts collapses into one solid block — on a sheet whose entire task is to count the shaded parts.
The answer blank is shaped like a fraction: two stacked boxes whose shared edge is the fraction bar. And when mixed numbers are switched on, every row gets the same widest slot — so the shape of the blank never gives away whether the answer happens to exceed 1.

The material covers fractions as taught in grades 5 to 7, so roughly ages 10 to 13. But because the task type, the level and the exercise count combine freely, the sheet follows the child rather than the grade — downwards for revision, and upwards for children who are ahead.
One control governs every task type, so "medium" means the same thing everywhere. For addition and subtraction, easy is like denominators, medium is one denominator being a multiple of the other, and hard is coprime — the common denominator has to be found. Multiplication runs from "by a whole number" through "fraction × fraction" to mixed numbers. Denominators stay at 12 or below for easy and medium, and go up to 20 for hard.
Yes, and that is the central promise: every sheet fits exactly one A4 page, in every combination of settings. No cut-off exercises, no stray blank second page. The type size adjusts automatically to the exercise count and to how large the fractions are. With the answer key switched on, exactly one page is added.
When you switch on Attach answer key , the generator prints a key as page 2 that mirrors the four blocks of the exercise page exactly. The answer boxes stay drawn with the value printed inside them, so the two pages can be compared position by position — including by children themselves.
Because a mixed sheet hides where the trouble is. A sheet that only simplifies answers one question: can the child simplify? The single exception is the optional mixed operations setting, which deliberately puts addition, subtraction, multiplication and division together on one sheet — as review, once each rule is secure on its own.
No. In subtraction the larger quantity is always chosen first, so the answer is never negative and never zero. Nothing is ever divided by zero or by one, and the operands arrive already in lowest terms so an exercise never quietly asks two questions at once. Simplifying exercises are genuinely reducible by construction, and build-up targets are true multiples. No exercise repeats within a sheet.
No. The generator does fractions and nothing else. No decimals, no percentages, no ratios, no fractions of quantities such as "3/4 of 20 kg", and no word problems. Exercises run horizontally on one line rather than stacked as column arithmetic. That is deliberate: this is a trainer for fractions, not a replacement for the textbook.

Several shaded parts then look like a single block — on precisely the sheet where the child is meant to count them. One thing to watch when printing: leave background graphics switched on, or the grey shading will not appear.

A sheet once printed also cannot be reproduced identically — every New sheet rolls fresh exercises.

Yes. One switch changes the whole interface and the printed sheet — including the instruction line and the notation: × and ÷ in English, · and : in German. That is aimed particularly at bilingual families and international schools.
Until fractions, a number was one thing. Now it is suddenly made of two numbers that together mean something quite different from either of them — and 1/8 is smaller than 1/4, even though 8 is bigger than 4. Almost every child who stalls here is not bad at maths. They are applying a rule that has always held until now.
On top of that, the rules arrive in quick succession: build up, simplify, convert, compare, and then four operations that each work differently. Addition needs a common denominator; multiplication specifically does not. A child who mixes those up does not have an arithmetic problem, they have a sorting problem.
Before any arithmetic, it should be clear what a fraction actually is. That is what the two picture tasks are for: in read a fraction the child counts the shaded parts and the total and writes the fraction down; in shade a fraction it runs the other way. Bars and pies appear at random, because textbooks use both and a child should be able to read either.
The benefit shows up later. A child who can picture 3/4 has a far better chance with
3/4 ▢ 5/8 than one for whom both are only pairs of digits.
Building up is the easier of the two directions, even though textbooks often start with simplifying. When building up, the exercise tells you what to multiply by, or the target denominator gives it away. When simplifying, the child has to find the common divisor unaided — that is an extra skill, not the same one reversed.
A practical route: a week of building up, until "the same thing top and bottom" is second nature. Then simplifying. Keeping that order avoids the classic error where only the numerator gets divided.
The hard part of adding unlike fractions is not the adding, it is finding the common denominator. That same step sits inside comparing — except that afterwards there is nothing left to do but look.
So it is worth slipping in a comparing sheet before the first unlike-denominator addition sheet. The child then practises one thing instead of two, and addition afterwards looks a lot less like a brand new rule.
You can do 7 + 5 in your head. You cannot do 5/12 + 3/8 — in between sit the common denominator, two conversions and usually a simplification at the end. If the sheet leaves no room for that, the child works on a scrap of paper, and the working is gone by the time you want to see where it went wrong.
The working-out lines option costs you exercises per page, but it turns the sheet into something you can go through together. At the hard level it is almost always the right choice.
Children notice immediately when they have been given "the easy sheet". Because every sheet here looks identical — same header, same four blocks, same look — the difference between the levels does not show. Three levels can work side by side in one class without anyone being marked as the slow group.
The same holds at home between siblings: two sheets that look alike side by side cause a great deal less argument than two that visibly differ.
